chosen to beWe are exactly where we have chosen to be, by the people we associate with, the things we watch, read, and hear.

A speaker had said that at a leadership conference and I wanted to argue with him; I did in my head a little bit. I thought… I didn’t choose to have the job I did at the pay that I got; I would have chosen more! I didn’t choose to be very shy. I didn’t choose for the air conditioning in my car to break!

But then I got to thinking about the people I hung around with up to that point, and other than my A/C not working, they were all in similar situations. You might say we were all just trapped in the financial matrix (which we were), but the main reason I was stuck in it was because I was always around others who were too!

I’ve learned that our results come from our actions, which comes from our thinking, which is influenced by the people we listen to, and the advice we get.

Where do you get your advice from?

When it came to finances, since it’s not taught in schools I got it from the media, the banks, and the people around me. The media is the advertising, trying to get me to buy their stuff now and pay later, while the banks are happy to help out and make me their slave for my debt. The people around me were other people who were broke!

I don’t know about you, but I wanted to be rich. If that’s the goal, I needed to stop taking financial advice from people who were broke like me! If they had the solution, why were they still broke?

How about relationships? Does it make sense to get relationship advice from someone who has been divorced 5 times? They may be able to tell you what NOT to do, but unless this person has now been happily married for 10-20 years, they may not have the right advice yet.

Sometimes it’s tempting to take the easy way out though, and take advice we shouldn’t.

I remember when I just started college, and I had to take a class in which I had absolutely no interest. At this time I hung around with people who loved board games like me, and who also thought that telling me to skip a class to finish a game was good advice.

I did just that. In the class I missed, the teacher gave us the main class project, explaining what we had to do for something that was worth 50% of our mark!. I had made a new friend in that class though, and asked him what we were supposed to do, and he gave me what I thought was a satisfactory answer

I did what my friend told me, and gave my paper to the teacher on the last day of class. The teacher looked at the paper, looked at me, and said “THIS isn’t what I asked for!”

I took advice from someone who didn’t have the results I was looking for, and got the same results. I failed that class along with my friend. Years later I found out that this friend missed the same class as me! He didn’t even have the information I was looking for, let alone the results!

This goes for listening to ourselves too. For most of my life I was a very shy person unless you were a close friend that I was comfortable with. I was constantly telling myself that I couldn’t talk to people, so I never did. After all, why would I bother trying to talk to someone if I didn’t believe I could?

I needed to start listening to people with the results I wanted, which in this case was people who could talk to people.

I have since been going through the program put together by Life Leadership, and listening to people who have what I’m looking for in all the areas of my life. By reading good books and listening to CDs like those found in the public speaking pack, I can now talk to people.

By going through their Total Personal Development program, I improve in my ability to lead people, to resolve conflict, to have confidence, to be persuasive and to just win in general. I’ve been able to build the belief that I CAN win and that I will. In essence, it has changed my thinking. It has changed me from thinking like I am who I am and stuck with what I have, to thinking like I can be who I want to be, have what I want to have; if I just follow the formula for high achievement!

By going though their Financial Fitness Program, I’ve started learning financial principles from the millionaires, from those who have the results I want from the principles being taught. I’ve learned how to save money, how to make more money, and even how to pay less taxes!

Be careful who you listen to; you might end up with their results.

Be purposeful in who and what you listen to; you can end up with their results!

The Financial Matrix part 2: Inflation and Education

If we don’t understand the full ramifications of the financial matrix, our future is in jeopardy.

In my first post on the financial matrix, I went through how it was a system of control, and talked in terms of freedom. But we should understand that even if we don’t care about freedom, it is still important to understand the consequences of this system on our lives, and what we can do about it.

I HIGHLY recommend watching the video at the end of this post, as it explains in great detail what we need to understand.

What I want to focus on now is WHY we need to understand.

Almost 2 years ago I went through the process of becoming a financial security adviser and got my certification. What I learned made me realize the scope of the problem we face.

Let me rephrase that; what I DIDN’T learn made me realize the scope of the problem!

Turn The Page, How to Read Like a Top LeaderI’m in the middle of reading “Turn the Page: How to Read Like a Top Leader” and have come to some realizations; one is that I’m certainly not reading enough, and for everything that I have read, I could have gotten more out of the books.

I’ve learned that reading is so important to our future, because when we read the right books, we are getting the life experiences of the author in the amount of time it takes to read a book. Success then becomes less trial and error, and more about leveraging the success of those who went through struggles before; about being mentored on what we should  and shouldn’t do.

You are where you are because of who you are; if you want to be somewhere else, you have to become someone else. This thought has come to me often throughout my leadership journey, as it has been said and taught in many different ways. I’ve learned that when we aren’t reading or listening to someone, we are talking to ourselves; this means we are talking to ourselves with the mind that got us to where we are. When we are reading, we are shutting ourselves up and listening to someone else with good information. This works for listening to great talks on CDs too, but I think reading takes it even a step further, and you get more out of what is written because you have time to think about what is written and reflect on it.

The Slight Edge by Jeff OlsonSuccess in anything is easy. It’s doing small and simple things continuously over time. The problem: these simple things are easy not to do.

I just finished reading ‘The Slight Edge’ by Jeff Olson, which I now consider to be one of my top 10 favorite books. The main point of the book: Success is easy; but so is failure. What is great is that we have the freedom to choose which path to take.

As we’ve gone through many times before, true success requires personal and professional development. Be careful here though; reading one book like ‘The Magic of Thinking Big’ or attending a leadership seminar is not enough. If it were, you would see many more successful people in the world due to how many leadership books get sold and how many people are attending leadership seminars.

Success requires reading good books on success, and listening to good information. It also requires the slight edge principle that Jeff Olson tells us about.

The slight edge is about doing simple things consistently over time. (more…)

A War on Mediocrity

In North America today, we are getting too comfortable with just getting by. We have been settling for ‘good’ instead trying to be ‘great’, and this in turn has led us to redefine what it means to be good, and we often no longer understand what ‘great’ is.

So many individuals have settled for good that these people are often considered to be leading great lives. I find this to be especially true in today’s economy with so many people struggling just to get by.

What is causing all this? Why are so few people not trying to succeed anymore?

I think the primary culprits are the media, our schooling system, and our government (which runs our schooling system and influences the media).

There is a war going on. A media war which we will call a war on mediocrity; a term I first heard from leadership expert Orrin Woodward.

How our schooling system helps promote mediocrity

I read an article on a story about a teacher who lost his job because he wouldn’t grade students according the school policy. The teacher gave a failing grade for students who failed to do their assignments, while the school had a policy of giving only an ‘incomplete’ for work not done. I’m happy to say the teacher had the character to stand up for what’s right, and told the review board that if he was given his job back he would continue to give zeros to students who didn’t do any work. He has since  been hired at a private school, showing that having character can pay off in the end.

We are so afraid of telling our kids where they are at, so afraid of hurting their feelings, that many of them become wimps. They don’t have the pressure of losing and don’t learn that to succeed in life it will take work. If they learn early on that they can’t fail when they don’t put in the work, then they will take this with them throughout their life.

We are also teaching our kids to not keep score, that we should not be trying to win. As I explain here, By not teaching our children to strive for greatness, to be the best they can be, we promote mediocrity as the ideal. (more…)

Winning – Losing – How We Play The Game.

You hear more and more these days that it’s not important whether we win or lose, but that it’s all about how we play the game. Many people in this camp will tell you that it’s bad to keep score because someone will feel bad and develop poor self esteem if they lose. One the other side, you see people talk about how important it is to win, and that nothing else matters. “Do whatever it takes” they say, and “failure is not an option.”

Are either of these correct, or can there possibly be truth in the middle? I believe  the middle ground is where we should be, and that it is important to realize this if we want success in our life, and in that of our whole society.

Not long ago one my good friends  told me something that should have shocked me more than it did. He said that his son was told in school that it is wrong to try to win, that it’s all about having fun and playing nice with others. They don’t keep score in their games. I was told the same thing by my nephew who goes to a completely different school.

This sounds good on the surface; we want to be having fun and we definitely should play nice. But think about what this really teaches our children; the future leaders in our society.

Leadership And Liberty

It’s important to learn as much as we can on the concepts of freedom, because if we don’t understand what it is and where it came from, we might as well say goodbye; we won’t see it being taken away a little piece at a time.

One of my biggest passions over the past two years has been the concept of freedom. I have always believed that people should be free to do as they wish as long as they aren’t hurting others, but have learned so much about the concepts of freedom that although my core values remain the same, many of my views have changed.

There are two sources of information that I have found to really help me understand what it means to be free, and that shows us how we can impart this information to others; helping to promote a free and prosperous society.

Striking Students of Quebec

Quebec tuition hike protestAre the students who are ‘striking’ in Quebec right or wrong in demanding to not have to pay more for school?  With everything that has happened, it is not really important who is right on that topic. What is important to understand is the actions of the students; what it does to individuals and how it infringes upon their freedoms.

If your interested in who is right when it comes to the tuition increases, There is a lot of information available on those ideas through the Austrian school of economics, and so I will not bring up those ideas here.

Regardless of whether or not the students or taxpayers should pay, their actions are wrong. The idea of a strike with today’s laws, goes against the freedom of individuals in society.
